Communication Design essays

Communication Design essays While looking for two designs to examine for this final paper, I came upon the New York Worlds Fair Poster designed by Joseph Binder and a poster entitled Victory 1945 by Shigeo Fukuda. In looking at both of these designs and comparing and contrasting them, I wish to show just how significantly large scale cultural issues can effect the collective conscious of a society and the resulting every day designs and images that they are subjected to. Although not much information exists separately about each of the individual designs that I have chosen for this project, the supporting historical context of each culture provides a wealth of information that can help analyze the foundations of each image. The first design is that by Joseph Binder entitled, New York Worlds Fair Poster. Created in 1939, this piece was designed in mind with the times. In the midst of the previous World War, this design attempted to show Americas embrace of modernism, technology, and its global power. In this composition there is a small cityscape of New York City in the lower left hand corner, the large trylon and perisphere (emblems of the Worlds Fair) in yellow taking up the foreground, random spotlights put against a dark navy blue sky, a cruise ship in red at the lower right and red biplanes in the upper left hand corner. The most noticeable thing about this design is its strong geometric figures, all of which are universally recognizable. The planes showing Americas strength in air, the ship also showing our strength by sea, and the cityscape icon as a symbol of our population and size. Meggs states that, .. world events would soon force the United States to cast aside its neutrality, tradi tionalism, and provincialism; the new embrace of modernist design was part of this process. Ivy Day 2019 What Is It, When Is It, and What to Do Next SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If you’ve applied or are currently applying to Ivy League schools, you’ve likely heard the phrase "Ivy Day." Ivy Day, or Ivy Admissions Day, is when all the Ivy League schools announce their admissions decisions for regular decision first-year applicants. Keep reading to learn more about what to expect on Ivy Day, when Ivy Day 2019 will be, and what to do with your admissions decision(s) once Ivy Day is over. Ivy Day is the day, usually in late March, when all Ivy League schools release their regular admissions decisions online.The eight Ivies- Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, and Yale- typically release their decisions at the same exact time as well.This time varies every year but tends to be either 5 pm or 7 pm ET. Top schools that are not in the Ivy League typically have different decisions release dates. In 2018, Amherst released its admissions decisions earlier than Ivy Day on March 23, whereas Caltech released its decisions on March 10. Occasionally, a non-Ivy school's decisions release date overlaps with Ivy Day; NYU, for instance, released its decisions on Ivy Day in 2018 (though at an earlier time). Ivy Day decisions are only for studentswho applied regular decision to at least one Ivy League school. For example, if you applied regular decision to Brown, Dartmouth, and Harvard, you could expect to get your admissions notification online for each school at the same time on Ivy Day. Note that students who applied early decision or early action will receive their Ivy decisions earlier, usually in December or January depending on the school. Because all Ivies release their admissions notifications at the same time through their respective online portals, and because applicants are (understandably) eager to get their results as soon as possible, Ivy Day often means long loading times and a bigger chance of page crashes due to the immense online traffic. Therefore, although it’s perfectly OK to check your admissions status as soon as the clock strikes Ivy admissions decisions time, just know that you might not be able to access your decision(s) as quickly as you hoped to. If you hit any major online traffic or are facing constant page crashes, it might be better to get off your computer and wait an hour or two until the traffic dies down a bit and you can check your admissions results without issue. Applying to an Ivy? Then you might end up here at Yale. When Is Ivy Day 2019? You know what Ivy Day is, but what about when? Unfortunately, the exact date for Ivy Day 2019 has not yet been officially confirmed by any Ivy League schools.However, by analyzing previous years' Ivy Days, we can make an educated guess as to when Ivy Day 2019 will take place. Below is a table showing Ivy Days from previous years and their days, dates, and times: Year Ivy Day and Date Time Decisions Released 2018 Wednesday, March 28 7 pm ET 2017 Thursday, March 30 5 pm ET 2016 Thursday, March 31 5 pm ET 2015 Tuesday, March 31 5 pm ET As you can see, Ivy Day is always at the end of March, so we can rest assured that Ivy Day 2019, too, will happen around this time. Over the past few years, Ivy Day has been moving forward in time- from March 31 to March 28- so it’s possible that Ivy Day 2019 will happen on or before March 28, most likely at 5 or 7 pm ET. We’ll update this article as soon as the official date is made available, but until then, expect to hear back from all the Ivies you applied to sometime in the middle of the last week of March 2019. What to Do After Ivy Admissions Day Ivy Day has finally arrived and you've spent minutes battling through the online traffic to access your admissions decisions.Maybe you got into a few Ivies but rejected from your top choice. Or maybe you got rejected from all of them. The question is still the same, regardless of your admissions decisions: What do you do next? In this section, we go over the steps to take for different Ivy Day admissions decision scenarios. Ivy Day Scenario 1: You Got Accepted to Your Top Choice! You got online and caught a glimpse of the word "Congratulations!" before erupting into a fit of joy.You did it! You got accepted to your top-choice school! Once you’ve spent time congratulating yourself and showing off your acceptance letter to family and friends, it’s time to sit down and ask yourself: what now? First off, if you’re having any doubts that this is the school you really want to go to, it’s perfectly OK to wait until you've heard back from all other schools you applied to (Ivies and non-Ivies alike) before you make your final decision. Don’t feel pressured to attend this Ivy simply because you got accepted.Think about what you personally hope to gain from your college experience, and then choose the university- Ivy or not!- that fits this criteria best. If this top-choice Ivy really is your overall top-choice school and you know you want to go there no matter what, your next step will be to formally agree to attend this school. Before you do this, though, make sure that you’ve had the chance to discuss costs for this school with your parents (or whoever is helping you pay for college) and that you clearly understand your financial aid package. After you’ve accepted your invitation to attend the school, you can then get started on declining any acceptances you got from other colleges. Ivy Day Scenario 2: You Got Waitlisted at Your Top Choice You eagerly checked your admissions decision from your top-choice school only to be met with a pang of confusion: you've been offered a place on the waitlist.You don’t feel elated yet you’re not devastated either.After all, getting waitlisted means you could still get accepted. This limbo stage can be tricky to deal with, but if you really want the opportunity to get accepted to your top choice- and you’re willing to wait just a little longer- you'll want toimmediately accept the invitation to be put on their waitlist.This will officially keep you in the running for a possible spot in that Ivy League school's newest freshman class. Assuming this school is still your top choice, it might also be a good idea to let the school know that if you’re accepted off the waitlist, you’ll 100% attend.Write a letter to the school letting them know this. You can include details such as what classes you'd like to take and how you can envision yourself being highly successful there. Ultimately, anything you can do to stress that this Ivy League school is your top choice will reflect positively on you as the admissions committee works its way through the waitlist. Unfortunately, you’ll more than likely not hear back about your waitlist decision until after the decision deadline (May 1) has passed.Indeed, many college waitlist decisions aren’t made until July or even right before the fall semester/quarter starts! As a result, you should put down a deposit for your second-choice school, even if you haven’t yet heard from your top-choice school.This way, if you don’t get off the waitlist, you'll still have a spot confirmed at another school you're happy to attend. Worst case scenario, you get accepted to your top-choice school and lose your deposit money. But, hey, this means you get to attend your top choice! Ivy Day Scenario 3: You Got Rejected by Your Top Choice Maybe Ivy Day wasn’t an exciting day for you because you got the dreaded rejection from your top-choice school.It’s OK to be upset about this- you just found out that you won't be able to attend your dream school.This is a huge setback, so it’s normal to feel sad, angry, and confused. But it’s also important to remember that all Ivy League schools are extremely hard to get into, so much so that the vast majority of applicants get rejected.So you’re definitely in good company! And getting rejected says nothing about your intellectual ability or academic promise. Once you’ve come to accept your rejection, it’s time to weigh your options: the schools (Ivy and non-Ivy) you have been accepted to. If you got into your second-choice school and know for sure you want to go here, get started on accepting your offer of admission here and on declining any admission offers you received from other schools. On the other hand, if you don’t have a second-choice school or are doubting where you’d like to go since getting rejected from your dream school, take some time to really consider which college you’ll be most satisfied at. Therule of thumb is to wait until you’ve heard back from every school you’ve applied to and then look at your acceptances. As you consider your options, here are some key questions to ask yourself to help you figure out which college will be the best fit for you: Are there any schools you’ve been accepted to that you can readily and clearly envision yourself attending? Where do you see yourself excelling intellectually while also having fun? Which colleges have offered the best financial aid packages to you? Ivy Day Scenario 4: You Got Rejected by All Ivies You Applied To Ivy Day isn’t a happy day for everyone, especially if you got rejected from all the Ivies you applied to.This is certainly much more of a setback than if you got rejected from one or two Ivies but still got into at least one. It’s important at this time to take care of yourself before you make any college decisions.Allow yourself to be upset, sad, or angry (or all three!). That said, try to also remind yourself that college admissions are really a mixed bag, especially when it comes to the Ivy League. Many qualified applicants are turned down each year. Indeed, the acceptance rates for Ivy League schools are abysmally low, so you’re certainly not in the minority if you get rejected! Moreover, know that Ivies aren’t the be-all and end-all of colleges. There are tons more schools that are just as good as, if not better than, the Ivies, and if you’ve been accepted to any of those, that’s a huge accomplishment! Once you’ve had some time to mentally process the rejections, it’s time to start looking at your other college options.Take a look at the colleges you have been accepted to.Are there any you want to attend more than others?If so, get rid of the schools you’re not as interested in and start doing some research on the schools you are thinking of going to. If, on the other hand, you’re at a total loss as to where to go to college now that you haven't gotten accepted to the Ivies you applied to, it’s a good idea to buckle down and start doing research on each school you’ve been accepted to. Specifically, you’ll want to look closely at the academics/majors offered, campus, extracurricular activities, and overall atmosphere of each school. I suggest goingonline to each school's official website; you can also check out real student opinions on websites such as College Confidential, Reddit, and Niche. If possible, try visiting the campus directly to help give you a more direct look at what kind of environment and amenities a particular school offers students. Finally, be sure to consider the financial aid packages you've received from each school.If one school is offering you a lot more aid than your other schools are- and cost is a huge factor for you- the amount of financial assistance you getmight be the main reason you pick a certain college. Play should be child-centered where the teacher sets the activities, but also allows children to explore and engage in the tasks making up these plays in order to develop their learning, if anything, learning is not always about setting out tasks but most importantly, making sure that children have developed these tasks or seeing whether they have met the learning objectives as set-out by the practitioner as part of the learning process. This has been reinforced by Fromberg (2002), when he points out that when a teacher asks children to do a task with them, they automatically label this as an activity. This therefore shows just how important it is for a practitioner to strike a balance between play and tasks for children. It is important for the practitioners not to separate pedagogy, learning and behavior through play, but to integrate this into a curriculum, as adult intervention is important as organized play places a great contribution to children’s learning and development. The quality of adult interaction in planning children’s play and organizing the play environment all has a part in the contribution towards children’s learning and in enabling them to learn how to function successfully within and out of the classroom environment (Samuelsson & Carlsson 2008). Hamlet Literary Analysis Essay Carl Jung is an expert in freudian theory but with a strong sense of the unconscious and its habit of revealing itself in symbolic form. His personality theory â€Å"The persona† is an archetype, or an organized principle based on things we see or do. Hamlet is an example of a person who is doing whatever it takes to accomplish what he thinks is right. Claudius gives a false impression that he uses to manipulate peoples opinions towards Hamlet. Through the physiological lens of Carl Jung, Hamlet comes off as insane trying to avenge his fathers death, while Claudius is the one trying to convince everyone hes mad, to take his rightful place as king. Hamlet displays false impressions by pretending to be mad. He does this in order to get attention from his mother, who does not believe him when he tries to explain to her what the ghost told him about Claudius. Hamlet in despair thought that his plans were pointless and did not know what to do without the support he needed from his mother. This shows the ego nature of Hamlet. Hamlet is young and focuses a great deal on his ego and worries about the trivialities of the persona displaying his false impressions. Hamet only false impression. Hamlet was deceitful, he would create spectacles in which people would misinterpret his actions for someone who might be insane. â€Å"To be or not to be, that is the question† (III, i, 56) This is the question Hamlet is contemplating throughout the book, to live, or to die. He struggles with the thought of suicide many times as a result of no one believing him. Pretending to be mad is the only way he can come up with to try to avenge his fathers death. This quote emphasizes Hamlets inner struggle to cope with two opposing thoughts in his mind, preserving his moral integrity or avenging his fathers death. It’s hard to say if Hamlet is ever really insane in the play. He struggles with life changing decisions that can potentially change many lives, which would be good reasoning for causing madness. There are many points where you might believe Hamlet himself doesn’t even know the difference between who he is and who is is pretending to be. In order to keep his crown on the throne of Denmark, Claudius manipulates events, peoples lives and relationships. He makes use of his power along with others loyalty and trust. We know Hamlets hatred towards Claudius, for marrying his mother and trying to steal his place as king. But Hamlet is the only one who believes this, everyone else isn’t aware of his intentions. It is clear that we are intended to see Claudius not as a murderous villain, but a multi-faceted villain: someone who cannot refrain from doing what he feels is right. He is morally weak, and content to trade his humanity for very little. Claudius shows a strong false impression, proved by Carl Jungs theory to be a â€Å"mask† used to present himself to the world. He’s trying to replace the King by taking everything that was his. â€Å"Though yet of Hamlet our dear brothers death The memory be green, and that it us befitted To bear our hearts in grief and our whole kingdom To be contracted in one brow of woe,Yet so far hath discretion fought with nature That we with wisest sorrow think on him,Together with remembrance of ourselves†(1.2. 1) Here Claudius is talking to his people about how they should be mourning Old King Hamlet’s death, but it would be wise for the whole kingdom to move on quickly. This is part of the â€Å"mask† he is wearing for the people, considering hes the one who killed the King in the first place. Carl Jungs theory proves itself to be true for both Hamlet and Claudius in the Play. His theory on the persona representing your public image is different, but apparent for both of them. For Hamlet, a false impression is apparent but for his gain only, He is pretending to be insane towards his mother because that the only way he feels he can get her attention. Claudius portrays a false impression towards all the people, because he is the only one that truly knows Hamlet is sane. His â€Å"mask† is to cover himself up for the Kings Murder. The truth comes out when its apparent He wants Hamlet killed. Jung states that at its worst, false impressions, can be mistaken, even by ourselves, for our true nature. This happens to Hamlet as he mistakes himself for many things he is not. â€Å"If one does not understand a person, one tends to regard him as a fool. † (Mysterium Coniunctionis). This relates to how everyone believes Hamlet is mad because they don’t understand what he saw and heard from his fathers ghost. Through the physiological lens of Carl Jung, Hamlet comes off as insane trying to avenge his fathers death and prove to his mother all he knows, while Claudius is the one trying to convince everyone hes mad, to take his rightful place as king.

A Glimpse into Nineteenth Century Brazil Essay -- Brazil History Histo

Esau and Jacob by Joaquim Machado de Assis portrays the tumultuous relationship between twin brothers, Pedro and Paulo, during the late nineteenth century; the twins symbolize the Brazilian political struggles during the transition from a monarchy to a republic. The brothers are emblematically born in 1870, â€Å"at the end of the Paraguayan War, a time when the Brazilian political elite split between conservatives and reformers† (xiii). The brothers fight; their most contentious arguments regard politics. Paulo is a republican and Pedro is a monarchist. The only commonalities the twins have are their love for their mother, Natividade, and their courtship of Flora. As an allegory, Natividade represents the old nation of Brazil – prior to the end of the monarchy – and Flora represents the new Brazil, which wavers between conservatism and liberalism. Both boys, and both political ideologies, vie for Flora’s affections, yet she, like the bud ding Brazilian nation, cannot choose between the suitors or the two political beliefs. In a pessimistic foreshadowing of the future, Flora dies without deciding between Pedro and Paulo, an ominous message from Machado de Assis regarding Brazil’s indecision to pick a definitive ideology after the fall of the monarchy. Despite Flora’s and Natividade’s dying wishes for the twins to cooperate, Pedro and Paulo are unable to cease their malicious antagonism, another grim reminder from Machado de Assis about the fruitlessness of political bickering and a warning about the future of Brazil. Why Read Esau and Jacob Unlike a conventional history book, the novel Esau and Jacob provides a personal glimpse of Brazilian society as it transitions from monarchy to republic. Joa... ...Empire and Stringing Together a Nation provides an integrated perspective of the complications of a divided Brazil during the fall of the monarchy. De Assis writes about the personal experiences and utilizes characters to convey the feelings and ideas of the time, Da Costa provides historical analysis as to why the monarchy collapses, debunks the myth of racial democracy, and Diacon explains how the two Brazils become one Brazil, a concept de Assis could not imagine. In 2011, exports of textiles and apparel & clothings totaled RM10. 81 billion from RM9. 32 billion for the same period last year, an increase of 15. 9 per cent. Of this, exports of textiles was valued at RM6. 72 billion and accounted for 62. per cent share, while apparels and clothing accounted for 37. 8 per cent share, valued at RM4. 08 billion. Higher exports were due to increasing exports of yarns and apparels. The USA, Japan, T urkey, Indonesia and China were Malaysia’s top 5 export destinations for Malaysia’s textiles and apparel & clothing. USA remained the leading export market contributing to 18. 6 per cent share of the total exports of the industry. Export was valued at RM2. 01 billion, an increase of 13. 6 per cent. 1. 1 The Unique Batik MalaysiaDeveloping batik as handcrafted textile – hand printed and hand drawn, has made us all acutely aware of the importance of three essential elements in producing a new product. They are, namely, Design, Colour and Technique. We need to pay attention to all of the three above elements giving emphasis to Design which requires the most and urgent attention. Secondly, Malaysians love bright colours and batik in bright colours has become a manifestation of that expression.
